The soap

Is it really fragrance-free?

Yes. No fragrance, parfum or essential oil appears in any Verse's ingredient list. A bar can still carry the faint natural smell of what it is made from, such as oats, honey or milk.

Why does the carton also say 'No synthetic fragrance'?

It is one of four things we chose to leave out and print on every carton: no dyes, no palm oil, no parabens, no synthetic fragrance. Fragrance-free means no fragrance of any kind is added.

Can I use it on my newborn?

Each Verse is made and labelled as a baby bar soap. Every baby's skin is different, so try it on a small area first, and ask your pediatrician if your baby has a skin condition.

Is it for eczema or other skin conditions?

No. It is a soap for washing, not a treatment, and we make no claims about any skin condition. If your skin reacts, stop using it.

Which Verse should I choose?

They share one base and differ by a single ingredient: oatmeal in Mellow Blush, manuka honey in Silken Gold, goat milk in Velvet Moonlight. If you avoid any of those, choose another Verse.

What sizes does it come in?

Each Verse is a 7 oz (200 g) bar. The First Poem set has all three Verses as 1.4 oz (40 g) bars.

What does each Verse contain that I might want to avoid?

Mellow Blush contains oat. Silken Gold contains manuka honey and carrot root juice. Velvet Moonlight contains goat milk. All three are made from coconut soap with shea butter, jojoba oil and olive oil. The full list is printed on every carton and on each Verse's page.

Is it organic?

Ingredients marked with an asterisk on the carton are sourced from organic agriculture: shea butter, jojoba oil and olive oil in every Verse, plus oatmeal in Mellow Blush and carrot root juice in Silken Gold.

Where is it made?

In New Zealand, as printed on every carton. It is distributed by ManuKind, Inc. dba Nature's Poetry in Los Angeles.

Why is it called a Verse?

Each bar carries its own short poem on the side of the carton. One bar is a verse; all three together are The First Poem.

When can I buy it?

Not yet. Leave your email on any product page and we'll tell you the day the Verses are ready to buy.

The First 100

Apply to test
Is the sample free?

Yes, for selected testers. No purchase is required and we never ask for a card.

Is everyone guaranteed a sample?

No. We are choosing 100 testers, picked by skin and household so the feedback covers babies, children and adults. Applying does not guarantee selection.

What do you expect from testers?

Use the soap as you normally would and answer a short, honest survey. Honest feedback matters more to us than positive feedback.

How will I know if I'm selected?

If you're selected, we email you to confirm your interest and ask for a shipping address. We only ask for your address once you're chosen.

Can I choose my Verse?

Yes. Tell us which one you'd like in the application, or let us choose from your answers.
